Situated deep in the Cambrain mountains llyn gynon is a large natural lake of around 70 acres in size. It holds abundant, free rising wild brown trout, averaging about 8oz, although fish to 1lb and larger are sometimes caught.

The only way to get to the lake is by walking, often over rough and boggy ground. It is about 1 hours from Teifi pools/Pontrhydfendigaid direction, or 2 hours from the Claerwen reservoir in the Elan valley.

The lake is very shallow in the marginal areas and can be waded safely. It is suited to classic ‘walk and cast’ style with traditional wet flies. In June the lake has one of the best hatches of coch-y-bonddu beetles in Wales, which can bring hundreds of feeding fish to the surface.

The lake falls under the Rhayader and Elan Valley Angling Association day ticket, which covers the Claerwen reservoir and other natural lakes. Fly fishing only.
